Best Time to Visit Lençóis Maranhenses
Month by month, no sugarcoating: when the lagoons fill, when they dry, and what each period truly delivers, through the eyes of a local photographer.
The water cycle, explained in one minute
The lagoons of the Lençóis are not permanent: they are born from the rain. From January to late May it rains in the region, in passing showers that gradually fill the natural pools between the dunes. The lagoons peak from June to September, and they only start drying up in late September. In the 2026 season, for example, they were all full by mid-June.
In other words: the landscape you see in July does not exist in December. Choosing the right time is not a detail, it is the whole trip.
Month by month
January to March
Rainy season. The lagoons begin to form and green appears around the dunes. The rain comes in passing showers, not in lost days. Prices are low, but the postcard scene of full lagoons is not set up yet.
April and May
Transition. The rain eases off from late May and the lagoons gain volume. The park is filling with water and is still quiet.
June
The peak begins. Full lagoons and a park even quieter than at the height of the season. For me, June is a secret: the water is already beautiful and you get to enjoy it at your own pace.
July and August
The peak. Lagoons at maximum level, turquoise tones, clear skies. It is also high season: more people and full pousadas, so book months in advance.
September
Lagoons still full and slightly stronger winds, without getting in the way at all. The golden light becomes spectacular and the crowds thin out. The drying only begins at the end of the month.
October to December
The dry season advances, but the larger lagoons remain. The empty desert has its own dramatic beauty, and you can relax among the dunes almost without meeting anyone.
What the photographer sees (and the tourist misses)
A full lagoon is not everything: light matters as much as water. My favorite weeks of the year run from early July to late September, when the sun comes in lower, the sand gains texture and the photos come out with a golden tone no other time of year delivers. And in any month, the hour matters more than the date: golden hour here is from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm year-round, and the park at that hour is a different place compared to midday.

You can, and it has its own charm: from October to December the larger lagoons remain, the park empties out and the desert has a dramatic beauty. Just do not expect the postcard scene of the lagoons at their peak.
Does it rain all day in the rainy season?

Is July worth the crowds?
It is: the lagoons are at their maximum and the views make up for it. But if you can choose, June and September deliver full lagoons with a much quieter park.
