Which Base to Choose: Santo Amaro, Barreirinhas or Atins

An honest comparison, with the one criterion nobody tells tourists: how each base performs in photos.

There is no right base, there is the right base for your travel style. All three give access to the same park, but the experience changes completely: the route, the feel of the village, the crowds and, above all, the scenery. Let's take it step by step.

And there is one number that changes the conversation: the time between your pousada and the dunes. In Santo Amaro, the village is less than 8 minutes by 4x4 from the park. In Barreirinhas, the sand-road transfer takes about 45 minutes to Lagoa Azul and about 1h30 to Lagoa Bonita. In Atins, the quad bike crossing takes 30 to 40 minutes. None of these paths is bad, but they shape the day in very different ways, and that is what this comparison shows.

How each base performs in photos (the view of someone who has shot here for 27 years)

Santo Amaro

The most preserved lagoons, with names few people know: Lagoa do Recanto, Lagoa de Andorinhas, Betânia, Ponta Verde and Gancharia, plus countless others, less than 8 minutes from the village. It is where I take couples who want the park all to themselves: less time on the road, more of the light put to use. The village is living its moment of discovery, with few pousadas and growing movement, so those who choose Santo Amaro book their stay early.

Barreirinhas

The classic circuit is Lagoa Azul in the morning and Lagoa Bonita in the afternoon, and both shine at golden hour. The sand transfer is longer and the lagoons get busy in high season, so the secret is choosing your timing well, and that is exactly what I do in my sessions. Because the transfer is long, I go and come back in the same vehicle as you, so the tour is booked with my seat already included, preferably the private one. For those who want a full structure of pousadas and restaurants, it remains unbeatable; book early, because occupancy runs high in season.

Dunes and lagoons of Atins stretching to the horizon, Lençóis Maranhenses

Atins

The river mouth, the dunes sliding down to the sea and the quad bike crossing, which by itself yields cinematic images, especially seen from a drone. It is the park's destination of exclusivity and sophistication, with higher-priced stays and transfers, in line with the profile of those who choose Atins. Because the crossing is long and the quad bike is a single-rider vehicle, I cross over with you on one extra quad bike, booked with the local driver alongside yours. Movie-set scenery for sessions with an adventurous soul, like Júlia's surprise proposal and Isabella's pre-wedding.

Package prices change with the base town: Santo Amaro is the reference price, Barreirinhas carries an access surcharge, and Atins, being the most remote, the largest one. All three are listed openly on the pricing page.

In Santo Amaro, the 4x4 tour can be booked with Renilton Turismo (reniltonturismo.com.br), an accredited local operator and my partner since 2017.

Frequently asked questions about the bases

What is the difference between shooting in Santo Amaro, Barreirinhas and Atins?
Santo Amaro has the most pristine lagoons and fewer tourists, with the dunes less than 8 minutes from the village; it is my main base and where I shoot most sessions. Barreirinhas is the most well-known gateway to Lençóis, with larger infrastructure and the classic circuit of Lagoa Azul in the morning and Lagoa Bonita in the afternoon. Atins is a rustic, sophisticated village where the Preguiças River meets the sea and the dunes are reached by quad bike, ideal for sessions with a beach and wild feel. I know every corner of all three and help you choose the best fit for your session.
